A Day in the Life of a Service Dog

Every service-dog team has its own routine. A dog's disability-related work may fill much of the day or happen in brief moments. A good routine also includes care, play, training and real time off.

Work and practice

Plan short training sessions around the skills your team needs. Refresh established tasks and introduce new challenges gradually with rewards.

Play and movement

Choose activities suited to your dog's health, age and interests. Supervise toys and any play with other dogs, and stop when a dog tries to disengage.

Quiet time

Let your dog rest without repeatedly asking for tasks. A comfortable bed, a calm environment and time with the family can all be part of downtime.

Sleep and care

Sleep needs vary. If work interrupts rest, plan protected opportunities to sleep and have backup support when your dog is unavailable. New fatigue, behavior changes or trouble doing tasks deserve a veterinary check rather than an assumption that the dog needs more training.
