3 Ways to Sharpen Your Service Dog’s Tuck Sit and Why It Matters

Originally published 2024-04-12. Training wording and physical comfort updated by Anything Pawsable on October 4, 2026.

A tuck sit is a particular sit transition. It should be comfortable for the individual dog. It is different from teaching a dog to settle underneath a table or chair.

Three useful training priorities

  1. Comfort first. Use stable, nonslip footing and let the dog move comfortably. Stop if the dog appears painful, frightened, or reluctant.
  2. Reward clear movement. Work with a suitable trainer on the movement you intend to teach. Keep sessions short and avoid forcing the dog into a position.
  3. Match the exercise to the dog. Discuss movement or fitness concerns with your veterinarian before adding challenging positions or platforms.
