Comparing Pet Insurance for Your Dog

Compare the written terms of policies available to you. A brand endorsement or headline reimbursement percentage does not establish which plan suits your dog.

  1. Check eligibility and exclusions. Ask how the policy treats pre-existing, hereditary and congenital conditions, age and the dog's work.
  2. Compare the total cost. Review premiums, deductibles, reimbursement calculations, limits and expenses you may need to pay before a claim is settled.
  3. Check when coverage starts. Waiting periods and exclusions may apply.
  4. Read the claim process. Ask about veterinary choice, records, direct payment and reimbursement timing.
  5. Distinguish insurance from wellness programs. Optional routine-care benefits may have separate terms and limits.
  6. Check cancellation terms. A refund or free-look period may have conditions, including whether a claim has been made.

Do not assume all bills, all clinics or service-dog work are covered. The former universal 90% reimbursement standard, use-and-refund promise, guaranteed savings and paid-brand endorsement have been removed.
