A crate can be an optional resting or transport space when a dog is comfortable using it. Introduce it gradually with rewards, an open door at first, and sessions the dog can handle.
Provide appropriate space, ventilation, and safe bedding. Meet the dog’s needs for toileting, exercise, water, and social contact. Avoid leaving equipment or chews that create an entanglement or swallowing hazard.
A crate is not a solution for separation anxiety. A distressed dog may injure itself trying to escape. Seek suitable veterinary or behavior help rather than forcing longer confinement.
Crate rest for an illness or injury should follow the veterinarian’s instructions. Hospital public access does not come with a universal requirement to crate a service dog.
