Backup care is useful for travel, illness or any time you cannot care for your dog. Pet sitting may mean home visits, an overnight stay or care in the sitter's home; boarding is another option.
Compare the individual caregiver or facility rather than assuming one arrangement is always safer, cheaper or better. Ask about supervision, experience, emergency procedures, other animals, fees and cancellation terms.
Introduce your dog calmly before the planned stay and explain its routine, medicines, handling needs and any behavior concerns. Leave written instructions, veterinary contacts and arrangements for emergency care.
For a service-dog handler, plan separate support for disability-related needs while the dog is away. Cameras may supplement communication but do not replace appropriate supervision.
