Begging often continues because it has sometimes earned food or attention. You can change the routine without blaming anyone in the household, including a handler whose disability makes dropping food unavoidable.
Make the desired behavior rewarding
Teach a comfortable mat or bed away from the table. Start during short, easy practice sessions, reward settling there and gradually add the distractions of a real meal.
Manage opportunities
Keep food out of reach when practical. If needed, use a safe barrier or another comfortable supervised space. Agree on a household plan so requests at the table do not keep paying off.
Practice separately
Build “leave it” and attention cues using rewards and manageable setups. Do not demand a long down-stay the dog has not learned, punish begging or withhold necessary meals or water. A qualified reward-based trainer can adapt the setup to your mobility and care needs.
